Around the time that we leave a spot for another adventure is when we've inevitably started to think we've mastered beginner local-lingo. And directions.
This learning curve is directly related to the length of time spent with any given spot. Five months with Utah consisted of a lengthy getting-to-know-you period followed by the discover-the-favorite-spots period. About half way through our time there, the expressions and exclamations that seemed so foreign at first were rolling off the tongue. Six months with Washington had the same time line. The months/years we spent in the Caribbean was a wonderfully exciting and comfortable language courtship.
The fun part is that we keep adding on to our vocab with each and every new travel relationship.
The search for unique eloquence is never-ending.
The meager ten days that we spent in China was more like speed-dating, but we made our exit with a few memorable fun phrases committed to the fully illustrated, hypothetical "Team Machete Location-Inspired Dictionary/Thesaurus"
Hypothetical examples within:
"Happy Thanksgiving" on St. John
"I do" in Old Lyme
"Use your imagination" in Shanghai
"howzit" or "yo" or "thanks, eh?" on Maui
"These hills are living!" on San Juan
